An annual commission for a mid- to late-career playwright to create and develop a new play with The Vineyard. Dedicated to Daryl Roth’s mother, Sylvia Connie Atkins, in the spirit of inspiring and supporting artists to be curious, brave, and creative. This award recognizes the extraordinary collaboration between Daryl Roth, Paula Vogel, and Vineyard Theatre over more than two decades, from HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE to INDECENT. The first recipient will be announced later this spring.

The Commission

This commission recognizes playwrights that have had a play in their heart for too long. This commission will allow them to go back to this play, with a deadline, and finish it. It is the time and space provided to listen to their inner voice and envision what the play can be and wants to be. The Vineyard will be cheering them on in anticipation of a new play that evokes the urgency of writing during this once in a global lifetime shift in our social, political, economical, and spiritual world. The play must go on.
