The Vineyard Theatre, Douglas Aibel, Artistic Director, and Sarah Stern, Co-Artistic Director, proudly announces the third production of their 2013-2014 season and casting of the world premiere musical THE LANDING.
Tony and Emmy Award-winner David Hyde Pierce (CURTAINS, VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE, “Frasier”), Drama Desk Award-nominee Julia Murney (Andrew Lippa’s THE WILD PARTY, WICKED), and Emmy Award nominee Paul Anthony Stewart (THE PEOPLE IN THE PICTURE, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, “Guiding Light”) comprise the cast of THE LANDING, a world premiere musical with book and lyrics by Greg Pierce (SLOWGIRL, THE WIND-UP BIRD CHRONICLE), music by the Tony Award-winning composer John Kander (CHICAGO, CABARET, THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS), and directed by Tony Award-winner Walter Bobbie (CHICAGO, VENUS IN FUR). The production will begin performances at The Vineyard in October 2013.
THE LANDING consists of three thematically-connected tales of desire, love, and loss, and is the first collaboration between legendary theatre composer John Kander and playwright Greg Pierce. Directed by Walter Bobbie, THE LANDING continues Mr. Kander’s artistic relationship with The Vineyard Theatre, dating back to 1987 when The Vineyard produced an acclaimed revival of FLORA THE RED MENACE, the musical by Mr. Kander and his longtime collaborator, the late Fred Ebb. In 2010, The Vineyard produced the world-premiere of the Kander and Ebb musical THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, which transferred to Broadway and will open in London this fall. THE LANDING returns for this full production at The Vineyard following a Lab Production there in the spring 2012. Performances will begin in October 2013.
The season will continue with the New York premiere of ARLINGTON, a new musical that follows Sara Jane, a young wife who valiantly tries to remain positive while her husband is away at war, despite a growing belief that something is not quite right. A stirring, funny, and powerful new musical from award winning playwright/novelist Victor Lodato (MOTHERHOUSE, THE EVICTION, the novel MATHILDA SAVITCH) and Vineyard Theatre alum Polly Pen (GOBLIN MARKET, BED AND SOFA). An inaugural one-act version of ARLINGTON was commissioned and presented by PREMIERES (Paulette Haupt, Artistic Director). The world premiere of the full length version will be produced at San Francisco’s Magic Theatre in the fall of 2013 before its New York premiere at the Vineyard in February 2014.
The season will conclude with the previously announced world premiere play TOO MUCH SUN, written by Nicky Silver and directed by Mark Brokaw. TOO MUCH SUN marks the eighth world premiere production of Nicky Silver’s plays produced by the Vineyard. The prior productions include PTERODACTYLS, RAISED IN CAPTIVITY, and THE MAIDEN’S PRAYER. TOO MUCH SUN reunites Mr. Silver and director Mark Brokaw (HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE, THE DYING GAUL, Broadway’s CINDERELLA), who recently collaborated on THE LYONS, which received its world premiere at The Vineyard before transferring to Broadway last season. In TOO MUCH SUN, Audrey Langham, a celebrated actress, unravels completely while preparing for a new production of MEDEA, and with nowhere else to go, she descends upon her married daughter for a summer by the sea. Her arrival sets off a chain of events alternately hilarious and harrowing. Performances will begin in May 2014.
