What is a Lab?
The Vineyard launched its Lab Program in order to provide artists with a safe and creative way to develop and complete new works of theatre. Labs are small-scale productions that rehearse and perform for a limited run that is closed to the press. The focus of a Lab Production is on the storytelling: production values are kept simple and actors often hold scripts to enable playwrights and directors to work and revise throughout the run. Thus Lab Productions aim to free artists from the pressures of opening a show in New York, while enabling them to see their work fully staged for a smart, informed Vineyard audience. We think it’s the best possible tool we can give artists to see bold new works to fruition.
