“Daddy” previews continue this weekend, as does our “Daddy” artist dramaturgy campaign!
Robert Rauschenberg, a true renaissance man, was a painter, graphic artist, set designer, costume designer, photographer, sculpturist and performer. A New-Dadist artist, Rauschenberg was known for breaking rules set by his peers and predecessors. Rauschenberg saw art as something that existed anywhere and everywhere, and there was no limit to the types of materials he’d use to create: “A pair of socks," Rauschenberg once said, "is no less suitable to make a painting with than wood, nails, turpentine, oil and fabric.” Some of Rauschenberg’s most famous works were his “Combines,” where he fused non-traditional materials to create interdisciplinary painting-sculpture hybrids. Cy Twombly, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham were some of his lifelong friends and collaborators.
