THE 2009-2010 SEASON

“It's a good investment and it is a sound economic development. …Take into consideration the impact the nonprofit sector has as the training ground for writers, musicians, actors, dancers, painters, photographers, filmmakers, and the like. …Take into consideration the ultimate effect these people and their work have on a thriving multi-billion dollar private sector. Supporting the arts is good business.” -Robert Redford, Actor

Arts in Education

Vineyard Theatre’s Arts-in-Education Program offers a vital service to New York City public high school students by providing access to thought-provoking programming, affording them creative and professional opportunities to forge meaningful relationships with the community. We encourage students to take ownership of theatre as a forum for gaining knowledge and expressing ideas, and endeavor to inspire the theatre enthusiasts and professionals of tomorrow.

In 2010, we worked with six New York City public schools: WIHS, Gramercy Arts High School, Bard High School Early College (I and II), Hostos Lincoln Academy of Science and Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School.

THEATRE “BOOT CAMPS” - $12,000 PER YEAR
Our two “Theatre Boot Camps” each academic year serve 40+ students during winter and spring breaks. The three-day intensive workshops led by Vineyard staff and professional theatre artists consist of hands-on exploration of various performance-related topics and outings to professional productions in order to expand students’ understanding of theatre making.

Recent “Boot Camp” activities have included: a performance of HAIR on Broadway with an acting workshop led by cast member Andrew Kober; a performance of PASSING STRANGE with a clowning workshop led by cast member Daniel Breaker; a performance of THE 39 STEPS on Broadway with an improvisation class. Award-winning artists including Hunter Bell, Susan Blackwell, John Carrafa, Joe Morton and Kate Whoriskey have all led Boot Camp workshops, and other productions our students have attended include DOUBT on Broadway to LOOKINGGLASS ALICE at the New Victory.

INTERNSHIPS - $2,500 PER INTERN
Vineyard Theatre’s Internship Program allows select high school students to participate in the day-to-day operations of a professional theatre organization. Interns work two to three hours each week in The Vineyard’s administrative offices for the duration of the academic year, receiving hourly wages and a metrocard.  Their consistent and long-term involvement allows them to take ownership of their roles and to grow professionally. Staff members become mentors, providing the students with the personal and professional guidance that they often do not receive in school.
