REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival

REBEL VERSES is a two-week festival of performances by some of the best youth companies in the region. Unlike any other theatre festival, REBEL VERSES provides an opportunity for high school students to perform their own original work and to celebrate the work of their peers, and gives audiences a platform for open dialogue with emerging young artists from all five boroughs of New York City, and beyond.

The festival was born out of the need for a platform where young artists can express themselves honestly and in an environment that recognizes the legitimacy of all stories and backgrounds. With a mission to journey into the unapologetic and unrestrained creativity of the next generation, REBEL VERSES values diverse stories ranging across age, sex, race and time.

The 2019 Festival spans two weeks and includes six performances: August 8-10 and 15-17 at 7:00pm. The Festival will feature performances of original work from youth ensembles, including Developing Artists with The Vineyard’s own Vineyard Theatre Student Ensemble, and performances by a variety of notable Guest Artists, who will share the stage with the youth ensembles to close out the show each night. Past Guest Artists have included Brandon Victor Dixon, Joe Morton, LaChanze, Diana Oh, Eric Bogosian, and REBEL VERSES spokesperson Daphne Rubin-Vega. During the two-week Festival, students also participate in workshops and focused discussions with special guests, which have included actor Judith Light and playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, among others. Each young artist receives a Metrocard to subsidize their transportation to and from The Vineyard, and meals/snacks are provided throughout.
