ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
The Vineyard’s Artistic Development Programs are at the heart of our mission, providing ongoing, supported opportunities for emerging and established artists to create new work and take creative risks. Through readings, workshops, residences, and developmental “lab” productions, we tailor our programs to best serve the needs of artists and their work and to guide projects at all stages of development. Many of the plays and musicals we help to develop go on to full production on our stage or at other theatres in New York or around the country.

ROTH-VOGEL NEW PLAY COMMISSION
This commission recognized playwrites that have had a play in their heart for too long. This commission will allow them to go back to this play, with a deadline, and finish it. It is the time and space provided to listen to their inner voice and envision what the play can be and wants to be. The Vineyard will be cheering them on in anticipation of a new play the evokes the urgency of writing during this once in a global lifetime shift in our social, political, economical, and spiritual world. The play must go on.
Playwriting Boot Camps at The Vineyard are led by longtime Vineyard artist and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel. These intensive workshops are designed to expand emerging writers’ creative approaches to generating new work. Rooted in an exploration of Aristotle’s basic elements of drama (plot, character, theme, language, music/rhythm, and spectacle), writers undertake both short and long exercises challenging them to expand their ideas about what is possible theatrically. Each Boot Camp serves 10-15 emerging writers, who also participate in a “Bake Off,” writing a short play that incorporates agreed-upon elements.
Sponsored by the Noel Coward Foundation.
The Vineyard does not accept unsolicited scripts for consideration. Playwrights may submit full-length scripts through a literary agent or accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a theatre professional (i.e. an artistic director or literary manager at a professional theatre).
