On the first Monday of each month – beginning October, 2009 – The Vineyard Theatre will present VINEYARD VOICES — a new series of panel discussions led by artists and theatre professionals connected to the Vineyard Theatre, including casting directors, performers, playwrights, etc. to discuss topics of interest to theatre-goers and artists alike. The first VINEYARD VOICES discussion will take place on Monday, October 5 at 7pm at The Vineyard (108 East 15th Street) in Manhattan.

VINEYARD VOICES offers an opportunity for audiences and artists to go behind-the-scenes and hear the voices of the theatre professionals with insightful, colorful anecdotes to share about working in the theatre and creating for the stage and beyond.

On Monday, October 5, VINEYARD VOICES begins with GOING SOLO – a discussion of the artistic possibilities and unique challenges of creating and performing one-person plays and musicals and why the solo show is back in a big way this season, both on and Off-Broadway. The panel will include Sherie Rene Scott (last season’s EVERYDAY RAPTURE, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, AIDA), Becky Mode – actor/writer of FULLY COMMITTED, her hit one-person show which debuted at the Vineyard and transferred on to a commercial Off-Broadway run at the Cherry Lane theatre, and actor/writer Colman Domingo among others.

Mr. Domingo’s new play A BOY AND HIS SOUL kicks off The Vineyard’s 2009-10 Season. Previews begin tonight, prior to its official press opening Thursday, September 24.

Written and performed by Mr. Domingo, A BOY AND HIS SOUL is a moving and hilarious new play that explores the life-experiences of a young African-American man in 1980s Philadelphia, propelled by the beat of classic soul. Mr. Domingo is best-known for his performances in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical PASSING STRANGE, Logo Network’s ‘The Big Gay Sketch Show’, and most recently in Encores! revival of THE WIZ. Tony Kelly directs.

On Monday, November 2, VINEYARD VOICES continues with THE ART OF CASTING featuring Vineyard Artistic Director Douglas Aibel who was recently profiled in the New York Times for casting such films as “Royal Tenebaums,” “Dead Man Walking,” “Squid and The Whale,” “Two Lovers” and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs.”

On Monday, December 7, the 2009 VINEYARD VOICES series concludes with NICKY SILVER AND HIS LEADING LADIES — an evening featuring playwright Nicky Silver who has had 6 world premiere plays produced at Vineyard Theatre including PTERODACTYLS, RAISED IN CAPTIVITY, THE MAIDEN’S PRAYER, THE EROS TRILOGY, THE ALTRUISTS, and BEAUTIFUL CHILD. Leading ladies joining Mr. Silver will be announced at a later date.

Douglas Aibel is the Artistic Director of Vineyard Theatre; Jennifer Garvey-Blackwell is Executive Director.

The VINEYARD VOICES Fall 2009 series runs the first Monday of each month at 7pm: (October 5, November 2 and December 7). Artists

Colman Domingo

(Playwright) is the author of WILD WITH HAPPY(Dramatists Play Service), A BOY AND HIS SOUL  (Oberon Books), UP JUMPED SPRINGTIME AND THE BROTHER(S). The artistic work of Mr. Domingo has been honored with Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk and Drama League nominations. His work has won the OBIE, Lucille Lortel, GLAAD, Connecticut Critics Circle, Bay Area Theater Critics Circle and Internet Theater Bloggers awards. Mr. Domingo has received fellowships and/or residencies from The Sundance Theater Lab, The People’s Light and Theater Company, and the Banff Playwrights Colony. Mr. Domingo is under commission from The American Conservatory Theater, People’s Light and Theater Company  and The Public Theater. His plays have been produced at Vineyard Theatre, The Public, Theatreworks, Baltimore Centerstage, The Tricycle Theater (London), Brisbane Powerhouse/World Theater Festival (Australia), Theater Rhinoceros, Lincoln Center Director’s Lab/American Living Room Festival/HERE, and Thick Description Theater Collective. Dot was developed in part during a residency with New York Theater Workshop. Dot received its world premiere at The Humana Festival at Actors Theater of Louisville. Mr. Domingo currently stars on the AMC original series “Fear the Walking Dead.” He has starred in the films Selma, Lincoln, The Butler and Birth of a Nation among others.
